Smyrna Dunes, a Florida Coastal Landscape of Palms and Sand Dunes by Judy Batterson

On the Florida east coast at New Smyrna Beach, the Intracoastal flows into the Atlantic by the jetties. The area there, known as Smyrna Dunes, has sand dunes punctuated by clusters of palm trees. People love to walk around the dunes, going from the ocean side to the river side and back. As I was walking there, I studied the brightness of the sand against the palms. The sunlight made every detail of the palm trees stand out as it reflected brilliantly off of the hot sand. I used lights and darks to show the contrasts. Original Oil on masonite. Chosen for "Best of America Oil Artists Vol. ll" book by Kennedy Publishing. (Giclees available $120, matted prints $65)

Daily Painting 1241 Bottle Brush Tree at White City Park Plein Air Alla Prima

I painted this today at White City Park, it was beautiful out. I was a little upset when I got there, all the beautiful pink water lilies from last year were all gone! Just the little round yellow ones were left. Some sort of lotus I think.

Well, I looked close at the water by the shore and I saw all these little red lily pads, about an inch or so across. I think and hope they are the pink lily plants. Maybe they just lose their pads in the winter.

Saw some pretty big fish, and also some big swirls, there must be a lot of fish in there now.

The painting is 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite, $300.

Nature Art by Sharon Guy

Terns, Watercolor and Pencil on paper, 6 in. x 4 in.

This morning, I sketched on Siesta Key. It was cool and windy. I sat in a chair next to a large flock of terns and gulls, and sketched and painted them while they rested in the sun and groomed themselves. The large, black-capped terns are Royal Terns. Their noise was deafening. I forgot my binoculars, but I was close enough to see them well. They ignored me the whole time I was there.

Normally I can't stand a smudgy look; particularly with palette knife. But I let myself get into it with this one because it was pretty near dead anyway. I think I was able to eek out a fairly decent painting. What I remembered is that there can be many ways to make a painting vibrant with contrasting elements. Color: red/green; saturation: high/low; application: one direct stroke/multiple strokes; texture: flat/dimensional; value: dark/light; edge: hard/soft. I think the list could go on for a while, but you get the idea. Here I seem to have used color, application, value and edge contrasts - for whatever it's worth. It's a very unsaturated piece - at least for me. I mixed the dark from burnt sienna, hookers green, and sap green.
This is the last post until early next week because I'll be spending some time house sitting and won't be bringing my own computer along. I'll still be on email though. Ciao!

OK - I have to comment on how ironic it is that paintings I myself am over the moon about, don't necessarily send anyone else over the moon. In fact, almost without fail this seems to happen. I'm sure many other artists can relate to the period of questioning your validity as an artist, so I thought it was something worth mentioning. Now - I'm certainly not trying to solicit praise for my last post ;). Just sharing the irony of it. Thing is, I submitted the post to a juried show after carefully deciding which painting might be best. Ultimately I know we're not supposed to worry too much about how our artwork is received, but seriously - how does an artist trust their judgment of their own paintings? What a can of worms....

I did the first "Clyde's Cattle" just about a year ago during a trip to GA with my girlfriends. I remember the day perfectly, and recall being ever so grateful that these particular cows stood still long enough for me to pencil them into the composition. That would have been just about 5 minutes. I was thrilled with the eventual outcome of that painting because it felt as though it unfolded magically, and really touched on so many of the quests I have in my painting. I had had a very long and dry spell of not being happy with much of anything that came off my knife, and the painting brought me back to the possibilities and hope for better things. Deciding a year later to give it another go in different colors was kind of scary. Why would I want to make another attempt at success with failure lurking right around the corner? Not sure, but revisiting the scene made for a content afternoon. What's more - I am delighted with this one too!

Daily Painting 1234 The Pond at Hackberry Hammock Plein Air Alla Prima

I went here yesterday, it was perfect out. Art Mundo sponsored the paintout and it was lots of fun, got to catch up with some friends and meet new people. I took a nice long walk and I got lots of photos to paint from too. Saw a big woodpecker, a pilated and lots of painted buntings.

Art Mundo is having some other paintouts, the next one will be at Adam's Ranch. This is an 50,000 acre ranch, its a beautiful place to paint at. You will see a working cattle ranch with cows and cowboys, I have seen deer and lots of interesting birds like the everglades kite. Registration deadline for the paintout is April 1st. $25. Been a while since I did a cow painting. I love to do them, even though (dare I say it), they can sometimes seem a little too cutesy. At some point in every day, I pass this scene on my way to see my mom. Each night the black cows are out for the evening. I love the green of the grass and the way the sun sets over the cows' backs. It's not easy to paint them impressionistically. I must always remember that for me, just a hint of what's there is all I need to keep me happy. As I've said many a time - too much detail and surveying of the land deadens my work and leaves me very disgruntled.

When I'm in scene searching mode, I spend lots of time squinting at things - all kinds of things - everything, practically. If I give my imagination enough time to obliterate the objectivity of what's really there, I can begin to pull just about anything from the blur of shapes, values and colors that squinted eyes will get you. This is one such scene... planning to paint sunflowers, but ending up intrigued by the cool north light behind a pile of fabric. Easily translates to a landscape - I think so anyway!

Here's the painting that I did last Friday night for a reception at the Ritz Carlton in Orlando. I had planned on painting another version of Hosta & Roses, but once set up, I realized there was too much opportunity in the actual moment to miss out on. I've never painted a dimly lit interior. This was so fun and surprisingly straightforward. The canvas had already been toned with a light wash of sepia, so the value was knocked down already. My goal was to maintain looseness and steer clear from too much homing in on detail. I find it hard to do when figures are involved - which of course means that means practice is in order.

Daily Painting 1233 Indrio Savannas Plein Air Alla Prima

Its oil on masonite, 8 x 10 inches. It was perfect out, a beautiful day. Started out the lake was like glass, perfect reflections, then a few minutes later the wind came up and the reflections broke up. The park is getting prettier and prettier over the years, there are some nice young cypress trees and lots of cattail reeds.

I had blocked in about half the painting and felt something crawling on my feet, it was fire ants. I had looked before I sat down, there were no hives, this was a parade of them moving to a new place. I moved over and all was well for a little while when they came back. This went on until I finally finished the painting and left. I just got a few nibbles, no real stings, I guess because they didn't feel threatened and weren't protecting their hill.

I have to let you all know how much I appreciate your comments and personal emails from this week. It's a comfort to be reminded that we all face being human, loving deeply and suffering painful losses. Thank you so much - it's good to be back!
Many of you have signed up for my newsletter just in the last few days. I will hopefully be getting started on the second issue next week. I plan to continue recording silent demos for the newsletter that will also be posted on my demo website, . If all goes well, I will make the full versions available for purchase with audio too. There is plenty of actual painting news that I still haven't shared yet - stuff that goes way back to early last summer. It's kind of after the fact now, but still fun to look back on my achievements.
Now - to this painting. I am loving working with cooler greens - hues that don't come naturally to me, but that clearly round out a palette. I mixed my paints with a fair amount of walnut oil early in the block in stage. It's almost like watercolor at that point - without the panic of drying too fast. Once the washy darks were established, I layered in a variety of green hues for the foliage, then took to establishing the large rose as the focal point of the painting. Pinks were added to help move the eye around - then a few careful flicks of the wrist to contrast harder edges with soft ones. This was obviously an offshoot of the painting I posted earlier this week, and a dry run for an event at which I'll be painting tonight. Wish me luck!

This painting was a hoot to finally do! I've had my eye on it for years now. It's one of those abandoned buildings right in the center of everything. Makes you wonder what gives. It's quite downtrodden, but there are still clear remnants of it's last paint job. On a clear morning the face of the building gets blasted with very yellow sunshine and it gets it's moment of fame for the day.

In honor of one of my closest friends who passed away rather unexpectedly overnight, this painting is aptly named. She taught so many how to live each day according to life's terms; to accept what God brings us with grace & glory. Unlike the loss of my dad, with whom I am certain no stone was left unturned, there was so much that seemed in store for Jeannie. She won the battle so many times over serious life threatening health problems. Just as one went down, another would pop up - diabetes left one leg; breast cancer left one breast; heart attacks left a weak heart and a recently discovered, but undiagnosed blood disorder left what? No one will know for sure. It would seem that her passing wouldn't be such a shock after all, but still it's so hard to process. Maybe, in fact, Jeannie turned over more stones than the average Jo and we came to expect more miracles without realizing that each and every one should be enough. She was an angel; a reference point for life. I'm so glad that she knew how much I loved her. Good night, my friend - well done.

Daily Painting 1227 This Old House in Fort Pierce Plein Air Alla Prima

I painted this today at the South Causeway Park of the old house that is by the historical museum there. It was a perfect day, not too hot or cold. What I love about painting flowers is the amount of abstract freedom you can take with them. Good thing for me, right? My family will still look at some of my work and say - 'what is it?'; but after a number of years heading in this direction, I'm confident that all will be well, despite the lack of realism in my work. It's an irony to many that a 20 year career in medical illustration doesn't maintain a stronger hold on my painting. There is at least one telling common thread - my love of alizaron crimson. Can't seem to shake it, though I'm warming up to the idea of trying sepia tones more as a grounding element to balance things out some.

Purple Rain III, a Florida Springtime Oil Landscape by Judy Batterson

The 8x8 oil paintings side by side give the image of a large landscape. The tabebuia trees and oaks are balanced, but the stream is off balance to give the effect of depth. The pink and purple impasto blossoms slowly rain onto the ground. The foreground flowers heighten the spring colors. When framed and hung horizontally, the eye closes the gap between the frames, creating one large scene. 8" x 16" plus frames, $400 for the set.

Purple Rain II, a Florida Springtime Oil Landscape by Judy Batterson

This is the other part of the total landscape joining Purple Rain I. Purple and pink tabebuia trees bloom profusely in the spring in Florida. And then the blossoms fall to the ground like rain! Impasto oil strokes accentuate the blossoms. I painted one large landscape of tabebuia trees, water and oaks as a diptych. Framed in beautiful floater frames, each painting can stand on its own, Or side by side they portray a large landscape in a small area. 8 x 8" oil framed, $225.

I've been in Ocala the last couple of days. Mostly here to visit one of my long time best friends, the talented and renowned artist/illustrator Barb Harmon, but also to see about doing some plein air painting. Ocala is about an hour and a half north of Orlando, and the area is at least 3 weeks behind in showing it's spring greens and blossoms. I had hoped for more color, and thought about scrapping the idea (especially with it soooo windy), but decided to embrace the grayness of the scenery. Also, the clouds were fantabulous! These are Gamblin paints, which I've used before, but not without some kind a medium to take away the pastiness of the paint and allow greater fluidity. Today I forgot my medium, so had to do without. The first painting was wiped, but I have 3 that I think made a decent mark.
I also wanted to say a few words about moving forward with my life, now that my dad is gone and my mom's needs aren't yet as intense as his were. I'd been away from the easel for nearly 6 solid months. In fact, the last painting I did was Festiva Maxima - the big one that I recorded and posted in my first email newsletter, "Even More", which debuted in September (only to be put on hold until ??? -a whole 'nother story). In order to keep focused on the business at hand, I stopped looking at art altogether - not online, not in magazines, not in galleries or museums, and certainly not on my own walls. No art period! I needed all my energy for my parents and their affairs. I have to admit that it was a nice break, but I'm wondering now how things will unfold as I come back to the place where I left off. I am cautiously optimistic that the time away will bring greater clarity and I'm hoping that these recent major life events will leave a lasting impression on me as each day comes and goes.

"Into the Light", 16x12, oil on linen by Maryanne Jacobsen

Believe it or not this was the very first still life that I ever painted! I'll never forget how proud I was of this painting! I took a workshop with a lovely man named Louis Tedesco, who studied for many years with David Leffel and his wife Sherrie McGraw. That was back in 2007 and I recall that I was a little intimidated at the time by all the talented people in the class.

Louis was a sweetheart, God rest his soul, and was very attentive to me in spite of my inexperience. I have messed around with the painting quite a bit since I first painted it. It's not as tight as it was originally, and I suppose that's not a bad thing.

I'll never forget Louis and what a nice man he was, as well as an incredibly talented artist. Louis, I hope you are painting in heaven with Michelangelo and company!

I need to stop holding on to paintings because I am attached to them for one sentimental reason or another. So if you'd like to purchase my very first still life painting, please use the PayPal button available at my blog at Paint Dance.
